About ME
I was born in Hong Kong in 1998. I then proceeded to live in London, Los Angeles, Beijing, Paris and am now currently residing in New York City where I earned a BFA in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design.
Conceptually, I pull from Orientalism, Exoticism, Primitivism, and Post colonial theory for my work. The place where I stand as a half American, Half Filipino woman living in the Western world and what that means to me is present in almost all of my pieces. For instance, I deconstruct the contemporary Western fetishized viewpoint and try to show people its harsh truths, illusions, and falsehoods. I ask why the global North fetishizes cultures and people of the Global South, specifically Filipino culture.
My art focuses mostly on sculpture and assemblage although I have never been attracted to solely a single technique. I always aim to create immersive atmospheres that include smell, sound, touch, and sight for people to experience.
My art has always been spontaneous, I don’t like to plan my works too much because I believe in the process of creating as I go along. As a result, my art has a natural, organic aspect. When presented with specific instructions, I can’t work to my fullest. Like most people, I resist feeling restricted and trapped, so I create art to challenge the structures that inhibit freedom.
My art has been shown at Next to Nothing Gallery (NYC 2018), Undercurrent Gallery (New York 2017), Parsons School of Design (2016,2019, 2020)and Chelsea College of Art(London,2018).
